The biggest question I get asked when it comes to picking sustainable, clean beauty products is “How do I know if I will like it?”. I think we have all gotten so use to going into the drugstore, department store, or huge make-up chains trying and touching before buying. It’s a little scary purchasing unknown clean beauty online. If you are lucky enough to live in a big city, Congrats! You will more than likely have a clean beauty store on every corner. For those of us who are not that lucky, it takes a little more shopper savvy. Here are my top tips for finding and correctly purchasing clean beauty if you’re a small town girl.

Ok, ok I know. This looks like a full out self-promotion. But in all seriousness, find someone who is already purchasing clean beauty and become their BFF. Whether it’s a blog, book, or an actual human friend. These people have tried and true products that they can share with you to help keep you from buying 10 mascaras you hate! There is always a period of trial and error for your personal preference but it’s nice to not go into it completely blind! When I was first starting, I read the book “No More Dirty Looks” by Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt. I would highly recommend this book. It’s a wealth of knowledge. And don’t forget, I’m here to help and love to share. If you have any questions, just ask! #newbff
Ask For Samples
The clean beauty community gives amazing samples! No joke. There are tons of websites that tell you they offer samples with purchase and others will happily give you samples if you ask. Also, look for kits, trial size, and travel size. Many websites I order from will have these sections in their shops. They are a wonderful way to try small amounts before committing to the bigger ticket price. Most clean beauty brands will sell directly to you through their website, however, there are several sites that sell multiple brands altogether. I’ve listed my favorites below:
- Spirit Beauty Lounge | the US Based | Hug selection from A-Z
- 100% Pure |US Based | Specific brand but their rewards program is out of this world!
- CITRINE Beauty Bar | US Based | Fantastic brands that you can’t always get elsewhere.
- Credo Beauty | the US Based | Over 60 brands plus suggestions on how to change from your old favorites.
Join A Clean Beauty Subscription
I have to admit. When I first heard about subscription services I was hooked! The thought of a cute little package coming every month just for me felt delightful. I was incredibly happy to find that giving up conventional products didn’t mean I had to give up my subscription services. I currently have three coming monthly and I love them all equally. Each month I get 2-5 sample size products from big names in the clean beauty world down to new starts ups making their mark. It makes me feel so good to know that all of these boxes line up with my beliefs too. This by far is the easiest way to explore new products and find things you like. Be sure to try these out!
Check Bargain Stores
I am a true Maxxinista! I love discount shopping and taking advantage of overstock. You can almost always find Classic Clean to Pure Super Stars (explained in my July Must Haves post) at your local TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Just be sure to check your ingredients…do not fall for the front of the package! The ingredient list will tell you if there are any dirty little secrets hiding in that bottle. Best to avoid those if you find them. But if you are up for a little digging you typically can find some wonderfully clean beauty products. Here are a few gems I have found consistently in several different states while traveling.
- Avalon Organics
- Deep Steep
- Juice Beauty
I highly recommend checking any local beauty boutiques in your area. These stores specialize in bringing quality, high-end products to their customers. They may not be a specific clean beauty store but could carry individual clean brands. And if they don’t you may be able to express your interest to the owner and see if they would be willing to start carrying a few. Being an owner of a small business I love supporting local businesses whenever possible.
Clean Beauty In Superstores
Don’t be scared off from your typical beauty superstore. I still consistently shop at Ulta for Juice Beauty and John Masters Organics. Knowing how to read an ingredient label is key here. You will need some time so don’t try to do this in a rush. Be sure to know the 10 ingredients you want to avoid and have Skin Deep on standby if you get to an ingredient you do not know or understand. By being a smart shopper you can feel at ease shopping in traditional stores!
