Who doesn’t love a good smooch!And if that smooch helps to keep your gut healthy and stable even better right? Well, say hello to my new favorite concoction! This smoothie was inspired by the lovely “smoothie maker” at my local healthy food store. She encouraged me to give it a try, and since then I have experimented with flavors and found that I simply can not get enough. So what is the secret ingredient that has such a hold on me? The Kombucha of course!! Oh, how I love a good Kombucha. Store bought or homemade this little drink with a kick is something I have every day. And mixing it into a slushy creamsicle-ly dessert is like heaven. So go ahead and give my Pineapple Smoochie: A Probiotic-Packed Healthy Gut Smoothie a try and start a party in your gut!
Why Gut Health?
“Gut health” and “probiotics” are a buzz word right now and for a good reason! But do you know why? I personally knew probiotics were necessary, but I had no idea why until I read “Tox-Sick: From Toxic To Not Sick” by Suzanne Somers and met with my naturopathic doctor. First things first, our gut contains up to 3.5 pounds of bacteria that are used to produce essential vitamins and hormones for our bodies. These bacteria run on a delicate balance of good bacteria versus bad bacteria. It is our job to help keep the balance through the food choices we make.
Unfortunately, on the Standard American Diet (SAD) all of the advantage is given to the harmful bacteria allowing it to run crazy and effect the way we feel every day! Now not only do we have the bad guys growing from our food choices but environmental toxins and chemicals can work to kill off the few good guys we have left. Antibiotics (taken for sickness as well as through non-organic meats and polluted water), alcohol, tobacco, radiation, birth control pills, sugar, cortisone treatments, food additives, and stress (A BIG ONE) can all kill off the good bacteria in our guts as well as a natural decline from aging. So what should you do?
Help The Good Guys Win
All hope is not lost, though! You can help the good guys win your overall health back. First, start removing things that kill off the good bacteria. We can’t control the environmental toxins around us, but we can monitor the amount of processed food, chemicals, and sugar we eat. We can also stay way from alcohol, tobacco, and learn to manage our stress better. And finally, we can add good bacteria back into our gut through probiotics and fermented foods and then feed those bacteria with prebiotics. Through proper nutrition and education, you can help your gut stay healthy which in turn will add to your overall wellness. Homemade kombucha and yogurts are the best because you can completely control the ingredients. However, on a busy schedule this can be difficult. When purchasing store bought kombucha and yogurt be sure to read the ingredients and look for low added sugar options! There are lots of great options to choose from to keep your smoochie as healthy as possible.
