My Morning Routine

Did you know we all have a morning routine whether we realize it or not? The first 15 minutes of your day will set you up to be either a rock star or down in the dumps. Prior to being conscience about my morning routine things were pretty poor. I hated mornings and was a complete grouch hitting the snooze 2-3 more times (and making sure I set my alarm to have the ability to do just that). Once I was finally awake I would grab my phone and check what I missed, stumble to the kitchen for coffee loaded with sugar & cream, then plop down in front of the TV for as long as I possibly could. I typically skipped “breakfast calories” unless it was a weekend brunch…oh a rich decadent southern brunch is to die for – but that’s not the point. The point is without even knowing it I was sabotaging my day!

Making Changes

One day I read an article that really spoke to me. The author stated that our moods don’t just happen. They are a result of our unconscious efforts. This blew me away. “You’re telling me I can train myself to become a morning person?” Seriously awesome! And boy did it make a difference. Family members continue to ask me how I am so happy in the morning and I truly believe it is because I choose my routine. I do not let my feelings choose what I do. There was a learning curve but now mornings have become by favorite time of day! I’m so excited to share my Morning Routine with you and hope you will give it a shot!

My Morning Routine

  1. Get The Correct Amount Of Sleep

    This varies from person to person but for me it is a solid 7.5 hours consistently. Your body needs time to rejuvenate, detox, and make you beautiful. Hello, beauty sleep!! I always check what time I need/have to be up and then religiously go to sleep 7.5 hours prior. On a typical day this is 10:30 for me.  And I know, I know this doesn’t always happen. There are times when I’m at a dance competition until midnight and have to be back at 6AM the next day. Life happens! Just be sure YOU are not the reason your sleep is lacking. You know what I’m talking about….*cough* Facebook and YouTube tutorials!!

  2. Stretch

    The minute I open my eyes I stretch my muscles in the bed. I reach my arms out as far as they will go, I bring my knees into my chest, and I roll from side to side. Taking really deep breathes I focus on “waking up” my shoulders, spine, hips, legs, and ankles. I do a more Pilates type stretch later in the day but this little moment of awakening helps get my body and insides moving and ready for the day!

  3. Brush Your Teeth

    If you think about it it makes sense. You’ve been “hibernating” for 7+ hours. Whether you mean to or not your mouth probably did a little breathing throughout the night. And the germs just build up. It’s super simple and takes two minutes. Give them a quick brush before consuming anything.

  4. Hydrate

    Every morning I turn on my Bella Ceramic Kettle (seriously LOVE this thing) and cut half a lemon and enjoy the warmth of this fabulous beverage. The power of warm lemon water is so amazing that I might just do a separate post on it. But in short, lemon helps to wake up your digestive track and supports your liver. It cranks up your metabolism, helps regulate your blood pressure, revitalizes your skin, and brings your body to an alkaline state. Depending on how I’m feeling that day I may add a little more to my water & lemon. My favorites are cinnamon and turmeric or some orange slices and  mint leaves. Yum, yum!

  5. Be Thankful

    While drinking my warm beverage I like to take a moment and focus on something positive and get my mind ready to be happy and thankful during the day. This could be reading a devotional, writing in a journal, praying, meditating, or affirmations. One of my favorite activities is my daily thankful log. It takes only a few seconds to write one thing you are thankful for but it does a world of good for you mentally! Plus, after time you have a long list of the things in your life you are thankful for and can reference when you’re feeling down.

  6. Drink Your Greens

The first “food” I put in my body now is my wonderfully rich and dark green smoothie! The health benefits you receive from the already broken down greens are tremendous and by drinking it first thing in the morning your body gets the full amount of nutrients immediately prior to digesting heavier foods! You also get the benefits of dietary fiber which helps aid digestion, regulate your blood sugar, and keeps you full longer. Changing Your Routine

Once you start to change your routine you will start to feel a pep in your step. You are now in control of your morning instead of the crazy ugly morning monster! All of these steps I listed above take me about 20 minutes to complete…which is less time than I use to spend on Facebook in the morning. I can’t tell you enough how much of a difference this made for me! Give it a try. Even if you only pick one or two things you will start to feel better and more alive.
