Ahhh, liquid fabric softener! One of the sweet luxuries of life. But did you know it’s one of the most toxic products in your home yet the easiest DIY recipes to make at home! And I honestly feel like my DIY works better than some of the store-bought brands. Plus it’s healthy because you know the precise ingredients and you can make it for cents on the dollar. High five to that!
Why Liquid Fabric Softeners
I am a huge fan of hanging my clothes out to dry. I just love the fresh cleanness of clothing after they spend a good 30-60 minutes in the bright sunshine. But only if you wash them with liquid fabric softener right! Crunchy hard clothes are a huge NO plus I prefer to exfoliate with a lovely sugar scrub, not with a scratchy towel.
This liquid fabric softener includes baking soda to deodorize your clothes and your machine. It is an excellent way to remove those tough odors picked up from life instead of just masking them with artificial chemical smells. Plus, baking soda is known to help remove stuck on stains and make your colors more vibrant. Now you may look at the ingredient list and turn your nose up to vinegar. I know, I know. I don’t want my clothes to smell like vinegar either…and they don’t! Don’t worry. Vinegar is an excellent rinse aid and helps to soften the clothes gently. The smell completely dissipates in the wash, and your clothes come out smelling clean. Ahhh, freshness!
Where’s The Scent?
It took me a little while to get used to a “clean” smell. And now I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The “scents” used in liquid fabric softeners (actually all cleaning products) are made up of a cocktail of hundreds of untested, dangerous chemicals. According to the Environmental Working Group, liquid fabric softeners can contain phthalates and synthetic musk which are suspected hormone disruptors. A University of Washington study found between 18-20 chemicals used in fragrance alone making fragrance allergies one of the top 5 allergies in the world. They also found acetaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane present in four products they tested. Substantial evidence points to these chemicals being human carcinogens. This information is easily available, and the products are considered “use at your own risk.” But I didn’t know, did you?
DIY Liquid Fabric Softener
To give my clothes a little scent boost, I use essential oils. Oh, how I LOVE essential oils! They are pure and natural and smell like nothing else in this world. If you have never tried them, I will encourage you to do so. Essential oils are carefully extracted through steam distillation and cold press methods removing the “essence” or oil from the plant. Quality is imperative, and if you use a high-quality oil, you can be sure you are receiving the most potent version of positive plant properties available.
