Chocolate Monkey Milkshake

Oh, how I love milkshakes! Chocolate has always been my favorite but I have been known to drink any and every flavor of milkshake offered to me. Which is hilarious because I HATE milk! Despise it actually. There is something about the taste of white milk that I really can’t stand and I have avoided it since I was a teen. Plus the thought of where it comes from and what it “actually is” always gave me the creeps. Weird, I know! But if you added a little sugar and flavoring I was all in, all the time. One of the reasons this Chocolate Monkey Milkshake is so appealing to me!

 

Healthy Milkshake?

Once I decided to “go healthy” I pretty much eliminated milk and milk products as much as possible. (Grass fed butter and cheese still show up occasionally) There are debates on either side about the dangers vs. the benefits of milk. I’ve read countless studies proving arguments for both teams. In the end, I decided to give up dairy as much as possible for two main reasons:

  1. I feel better when I don’t drink or eat it. Milk can be difficult to digest and for me that was 100% the case. I have way less indigestion and belly bloat when I avoid milk. But it can be different for everyone. If you listen to your body (not your mind) it will tell you what it needs and what it really doesn’t like!
  2. The only dairy products that I really…and I mean really liked were the ones with sugar. If you gave me a cup of cows milk immediately after milking the cow I would gag! No Lie!! And I eat a ton of green veggies so the calcium argument didn’t work with me either. Since it is my goal to eliminate as much added and processed sugar as possible that meant “dairy goodies” were off limits.

Dairy Free Milkshake

So this lead me on a quest. How to enjoy my favorite treat while still keeping my body and digestion healthy? Enter CHOCOLATE MONKEY MILKSHAKE….no milk, no ice cream, yet still so very yummy! Thick and creamy with my favorite flavors of chocolate and peanut butter. What more can you ask for!

You may be wondering why MONKEY? Well, there is a banana in it…but this one is named after my adorable niece! We share the same sweet tooth and boy is it a big one. Over the last year she has been learning more about the effects of sugar and how to make healthy choices at a young age. It makes me so proud when I see her choose options with less sugar or tell the grown up in charge “I think I’ve had enough sugar for the day”. She’s definitely mastered that 5 going on 25 routine! So this ones for you sweet Monkey Girl! A healthy, sweet version of our favorite treat. Hope y’all enjoy it too!

 

Chocolate Monkey Milkshake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups almond milk (or your favorite non-dairy milk)
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 cup frozen banana chunks
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt & cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients into a high power blender and blend until smooth
  2. If mixture is too thick, add more almond milk slowly until you achieve your desired texture
  3. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or add 1 cup ice to drink immediately
